Bridport MapRun Wayfarers Course

The Course

This is a 'score' course made up of 30 controls. After the Start, you can visit them in any order. The numbers are just for identification.

Each control is worth so many points - 10, 20 or 30. On the map there is a list of controls showing how many points you score for each one and describing exactly where they are.

The aim is to collect as many points as possible by visiting as many as you can in 90 minutes.

Beware of exceeding the 90 minute limit. You will be penalised 10 points for every minute or part-minute late back at the Finish!

The Map

The app displays a little map on your phone. Nice enough, but it's very hard to plan a sensible route around the maze of little streets & paths on such a tiny scale. Happily, here is a proper orienteering map:

Download Word docx    or     Download pdf

You are strongly advised to download it, print it and use it to find your way around the course!

How to use the MapRun app

First of all, download and install the MapRun app. The version you need is called MapRunF. It can be found on Google Play (Android) or the App Store (Apple).

You'll be asked to enter your details - name, email, mobile no, year of birth, postcode - to identify yourself in the results system. For Club or Team enter IND (independent).

Make sure your phone is set up with GPS/Location services enabled. This should normally be so if you have other GPS-based apps on your phone like Google or Apple Maps.

Start the app. Tap Events Near Me. The app will determine your location, then show closest events.

Select Bridport MapRun Wayfarer. Wait for the course to download.

The Start is in Asker Meadows at a path junction about 70m N of Morrisons car park. Far be it from me to suggest where you might leave your car... To alleviate doubts, I strongly recommend a packet of Morrisons strawberry doughnuts which will solve everything!

Tap Go to Start when you're ready. A course map appears on your screen and a red line shows your track on the way to the Start. The track disappears once you're on the course.

The Start (triangle), Finish (double circle) and controls are coloured purple. The app will begin logging your track and time when you pass through the Start. As you pass each one you'll get an audible tone and their colour changes to green.

You need to pass through the Finish to stop the timer. Don't pass too close to it before you want to finish as you may find your course prematurely ended!

Afterwards you can browse your results and look at your track - explore this at leisure.

Please note...

These courses are not registered with British Orienteering as events or activities and so you are not covered by BOF public liability insurance: you are going for a personal walk or run as you take permitted daily exercise.

Hints and Tips

Estimate how far you can go in 90 minutes and plan a route that brings you back to the Finish before time is up.

Pick a good order to visit controls that is efficient and avoids going back past locations you’ve already been to.

Use the orienteering map to choose the best route between individual controls.

Look where the higher scoring controls are, and plan how to include as many as you can in your route.

All of these get easier with experience, and you may find you score better a second time!

GPS accuracy depends on high buildings, tree cover, satellite geometry and your phone. Default GPS tolerance is 15m so you should register a control on approach or close by. If you have a lot of trouble, you could click Options and Settings in MapRun beforehand and increase punchTolerance to 20m or 25m.

Good luck!
