Orienteering at Kingston Lacy.
On Thursday 18th of March yr5&6 went to Kingston Lacy to do some orienteering. We started off in the courtyard where we had to do a small photo course. On the photo course we were given small photos of places in the courtyard which we had to find in our groups. Then we had to do a bigger photo course on a big piece of open land. In our group the first photo we had to find was of a black gate by a pond. After we had the photo course we went for a snack in the education room. While we were eating our snacks we watched a short video on orienteering and orientating your body around the map. After the video everybody had this song in their head which went like this, 'Move your body round the map, move your body round the map, move your body,' which after a while got really annoying. (Even the next day at school we still had it in our heads.)
Next after the annoying song we did the Star Course. On the star course the area we had to cover was quite big. We were all given a map to show where all the control points were and then Mr Adrian Wood (our teacher for the day) set us off on our course. Our group had Vicky, Katherine and Nicola in it and our first code to find was number 13, which was GH and Vicky remembered it as George Hamilton! We carried on in the same way for quite a long time until we had found all the controls we had to find. Finally we found our last control and found out we had come first! After everybody else had finished we went into the big dining courtyard and had lunch.
When we had all finished we did the white course, which was very tiring but the controls weren't too difficult to find. After lots of puffing and panting we reached the end. When everybody had turned up we said goodbye to Mr Adrian Wood.
While we had been doing all of these courses Mr Kite and Mr Smith (Nicola's Dad) had been setting out a more difficult course called a yellow course. The yellow course consisted of 16 different control points. This time Mr Kite wanted Nicola to go on her own, so Katherine and Vicky went together as a pair. The first five controls were easy to find but then on number six and seven quite a few people walked straight past them but since Vicky is very good at seeing them she spotted it. We carried on doing the course well until we got to number 12, because Katherine thought we were doing number 13! After a long time we realised that we had took a wrong turning so we turned around and found the right turning and finished the course successfully! Everybody enjoyed it and the best thing was we got some chocolate at the end of the yellow course.
On the bus back from Kingston Lacy Mr Kite told us the result of the yellow course:
In third place was Michelle Newberry and Stephanie Davis,
in second place was Katherine Barrett and Vicky Parker,
and in first place was Myfanwy Lloyd and Leah Carter.
